| "Sacrifice is pleasure". For some reason I woke up with the Sepultura song on my mind in the Sunday. Maybe because it was 4:20 in the morning, maybe because I couldn't sleep (can someone explain why church bells tolls in the middle of the night) or because what was to come. |
"Sacrifice is pleasure". |
ETAPE DU TOUR | THE RACE DAY
IN FRANCE DAY TWO AND THREE
| Breakfast. That moment a cyclist stuff their body with lots of sugar. Of all types. Fast sugar, slow sugar, all sugars. We need to store energy for the longer team ride. And we need to make a decision: one group will do the big climb of Sunday, a big 14 kms with steep ramps of 15% gradient and average 9%, and the other group will go for any climb distance but looking for something around 6% inclination. Booth should do the same distance: 70 kms. That's how the day started. Take a look how it went. |
IN FRANCE DAY 1
| Arriving in the mountains is always a special moment. There is this feeling of expectation that something big and especial will happen. And with that feeling in our guts we rolled out of the bus to encounter some of the colleagues that arrived earlier. Did they feel the same? Do we all in the bus feel it? Or am i just a romantic idiot? I will never know because we don't talk about that kind of stuff. It is just left in mid air. See after the link how the first day in France went and some pictures. |
END OF TRAINING YEAR
| The training year is done for the L'Etape du Tour. Sunday was the last training ride of 136 kms around Utrecht and Monday was my last ride to work, completing a total of almost 2.260 kms. More than 1.250 kms behind last year but with some very good results. See the year totals after the link. |

FUNDRAISING FOR ALS SO FAR
| Just a little over one week for the L'Etape du Tour race day in France. Also, just another 2 weeks of fundraising for the Dutch ALS foundation. So, far 2 or my milestones of this year have been acomplished: I've cycled the Mont Ventoux 3 times in a day to raise awareness for the ALS disease and I have reached my weight goal. Now I still have 2 goals to reach: complete the race with a good result and raise around 2.500 US dollars, which Nike would double for the foundation. The race I have to to wait until Sunday 7th and the donations we have still 2 weeks to get to that goal. So far, I've reached the total of 1.745 Euros, which in USD is 2.270 dollars. Very close!!! The list above you is the people that donated to the foundation either directly to me or via the Nike Foundation Portal after receiving my email. Huge thank your! You are the real champions! SEE HERE ALL THE DETAILS ABOUT HOW TO DONATE |
ARNHEM TEAM RIDE
| Great ride today around the Veluwe park close to Arnhem. 156 kms with a good team, heavy pushing on the hills around Posbank with heart rate at 184 bpm at several points. And a dazzling 56 kms on the way back to our car, pushing above 35 kms/h all the time. Fantastic and exciting ride. |
BORROWING A FRIEND'S BIKE
| Tough week this one: just two days after the riding on Mont Ventoux, I went to work on a dream bike from a colleague, trained tempo riding on Wednesday to work and back in the long way, did 20 minutes again of interval training on Thursday and recovery ride to work on Friday. Today is relaxing with home jobs and tomorrow 150 kms team ride. See after the link the details of all this and also how I do my rice cakes! |
VENTOUX 3 TIMES: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
| This Friday I put an end to my unfinished business with Mont Ventoux. Four years ago I couldn't climb it on the bike and apart from being forced to walk big sections I fainted at the end due to the effort. This time I managed to climb it 3 times in the same day as part of the Tour do ALS. And the first time from Bedoin I did it under 2 hours non-stop. This means my second sport milestone of the year completed in big fashion. Take a look after the link how was the day. |
WINDY AND SUNNY TRAINING
|
Today was the last long ride before traveling to France to face the Mont Ventoux. 80 kilometers in 2 hours and 50 minutes in a very nice weather, windy and sunny day. Perfect for cycling. |
Dia perfeito. |
NEW INTERVAL TRAINING SCHEME
YEP, GOT TO HAVE BALLS TO DO THIS
|
While the fundraising is on-going for the ALS Foundation, I'm keeping up with my trianing schedule. Long rides on weekends, recovery rides on Mondays, Tempo rides on Tuesdays and Interval trainings on Thursdays. Rest on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The new thing is that I'm implementing a new interval routine and it is a killer of a scheme. Take a look what I'm talking about. |

And now I can officially start the fundraising for the ALS Foundation in holland. Please help to raise awareness for this disease by donating a little money. If you donate Nike will double your amount! Take a look after the link at the details and how to donate. |

TRAINING IN LIMBURGS MOOISTE
| Another big day for to prepare for the Tour du ALS. Seven of us went to Limburg to another hard climbing training as preparation for Ventoux challenge. This time racing in the Limburgs Mooiste esportive, a 175 kms race with 30 steep climbs, one of the toughest of the year that we completed in 7h45. Very hard day. Take a look how the day went after the link. TOUR DU ALS CHALLENGE
|
In 2 weeks I will face a big challenge. I will attempt to climb the famous Mont Ventoux in France 3 times in the same day. This as part of the Tour du ALS challenge to raise awareness to the disease and it means 68 kms of climbing an steep mountain and an elevation gain close to 4 thousand meters. It will be a big challenge as I've missed 2 months of my training due to the back issues.
Learn more about the what will happen after the link. |

180 KMS AROUND THE MARKERMEER
GREAT VIEWS AND NICE WEATHER TODAY
| Hard riding today with the Nike team: 180 kilometers done in 6 hours and 15 minutes. That is an average of 28.8 kms/h and is the highest so far. That is also way more then I was expecting and I paid the price at the end, when the guy with the hammer hit me very hard and I had to go to the reserve to finish the last 20 kms.
Distance:180 kms
Time: 6 h 15
avg speed 28.8 kms/h

HARD AS NAILS
THIS GOOGLE PICTURE WAS NOT TAKEN TODAY! I WISH IT WAS...
|
Peter and I signed-up for an easy 160 kms on the flats of the North Brabant region. What we've got? 120 kms ride hard as nails: hard headwinds, stormy rains and mind numbing straight lines (of course against the wind) and quite some mechanical problems. At the end, no moment of relaxation and the whole 4 and half hours pushing the pedals, lots of pain in my back and a very uninteresting ride. |
