Back to the road today! After almost a month only doing training inside, I decided to go out today regardless of weather.  I met 3 other guys in Utrecht center and we did a nice 90kms ride around the region. Some sprints, some good pacing but mainly training in zone 2 (between 146 and 156 bpm). The weather was pretty bad with heavy cold rain but good training.

Check after the link for details.

The original plan for the weekend was for a team ride on Sunday with the Nike team. But the extreme rain and wind forecast made the organization calcel the ride for the safety of the rookies. Not wanting to lose another week training, a couple of us agreed to ride today when the forecast was better. Today the team was Stef, Tom, Richard and me.

Right from the start in the city center, the rain was heavy pouring down and the wind was strong. Tom was pushing quite strong from the get go, something we should be used to by now. From Utrecht we went to Soest where we added Mark to our team and went around the area with mostly flat roads and almost nobody cycling due to the bad weather.

One new thing that I’ve never done was to ride on the Soest airport runway. Great for some fast pacing and little sprint, with a heart rate above 175 bpm. We did the spring thru the runway twice and I completely blowup. Because I did the interval training yesterday, my legs were not in shape for acceleration or for climbing, but I managed to keep up on the flats.

But best of the day was really to be out there with the guys, sprinting against each other and making stupid jokes. Gotta love that!

POSTER 2

POSTER 1

While I haven’t had the chace to go out cycling due to several reasons, I’m training indoors using the Tacx. But I don’t manage to do more than one hour. So, it leaves time to check some nice posters on the internet.

RAIN & MISTY

Now that the ice and snow are gone I went back to the bike. Last sunday I had to train on the bike trainer int he Attick, which I don’t like. The weather forecast was of cloudy and dry, but in reality I got a  very rainy and misty day and the wind was quite constant.  Felt good most the of the ride but kept it short to avoid getting too cold.

That being said, the week was good in training. I managed to do 2 interval sessions during the week and yesterday I went back to the attick and squeezed another hour of endurance training. Hope this next week goes well and the weather picks up!

ICE COLD RAIN

KINDERDIJK

Mixed feelings about today's ride. The weather forecast was dry and sunny and the plan was to go against the wind (force 4) all the way to Kinderdijk on top of the dike and comeback enjoying the tailwind. Something like 110 kms. But the ice cold and strong rain made it a tough ride for me and I suffer a lot at the end. I was so cold that I had to stay a half an hour on a hot shower to wam it up enough and stop shaking. Check the details after the link.

FIRST OF 2016

First training of the year: 70 kms zone two training. Good for build up endurance. The wind was not so strong and I decided to go to the Amsterdamrijkanaal as it has a very long straight stretch. Great for keeping the heart rate stable between 145 and 155 (which is my zone two). Weather was cloudy and sun breaking and the ride was very relaxing. Good start.

CLOSING THE YEAR

Last ride from the year in a sunny, cold and windy day. It was a good year with lots of indoor training and nice races. The highlights are below, on top of the great training rides I did with the Nike team and with Peter, my most constant cycling buddy this year.

Tour du ALS for the third time. Climbing the Mont Ventoux 3 times in one go and the best results and a great way to honor our friend Jos. Managed to climb all 3 times with a good cadence and especially the side from Maulacene where I managed to keep a great cadence uphill.

Col du Glandon on the Etape du Tour: a great ride in general but the climb of Glandon was very good and I managed to beat my own target by 10 minutes. The rest of the Etape on 41 degrees Celsius was less pleasant.

The  WTC Grensland Klassieker: a great team ride which I did half with the fast group and it was great feeling to be able to push in every climb.

The year in numbers:
Kilometers: 4.683
Activities (including gym): 128
Hours trained: 264
Hours on the road: 182
Kcalories: 133 thousand
Max speed: 82 km/h
Max heart rate: 190

ROUND UTRECHT

Sunrise at Utrecht Center

That was the beginning of yesterday ride with Tom, Stef and John.  Good ride with a punchy speed on the lekdijk and being dropped climbing the Amerongseberg.  The damage Tom caused in the dike going over 40 km/h really worked out and I climbed the easy side of the hill with milky legs. But the rest of the ride against the wind was great and better than last week.

Staring at the sea

Algumas vezes me senti assim.

I'm a stranger, killing and arab.

OVERDOING IT... AGAIN

pic 102 kms | 3 h 47 m | avg speed 27.1 km/h | avg hr 156 bpm | 2.345 kcal

December 20th and I’m cycling 100 kms in 10 degrees and sunny day. When did that happen before? Never. But I’m not complaining. And to make the most of it, I overdid quite a lot, suffering the last 15 kms just to get back home. But it felt fantastic to be back on the road after 7 weeks of little training and no bike at all!

I met Richard and Tom in Hilversum and from there we went direction north, with a bit of cross wind or tail wind. It was good fun and we even saw a running llama on the other side of the road. I’ve raced cats, dogs and even eagles. But this was he first time for a llama! there was also a moment when a gray heron flew very close to my head and the guys were making fun of me… all in good sport.

Everything was going find until we split in Bilthoven to go back home. The head wind and my lack of condition hit me hard. I went down from 28/30 km/h to mere 22 or best case 25 km/h. No power in the legs at all. It was a long 15 kms back home but at least no dog overtook me this time! Anyway, very happy to be healthy again (no throat infections, colds, etc) and out on my bike.

RECOVERY

56 kms | 1 h 54 m | avg speed 29.3 km/h | avg hr 153 bpm | 1.255 kcal

Autumn ride today.

After two weeks out of any sport because of a strong cold, I went for a little ride to start recovering. I can still feel the cold isn’t totally gone but it was good to go out in good weather and clean the lungs.

Because I knew it would be short, I went for a very known route alongside the farms or the region and later following the river Vecht. There was literally no wind I could keep up speed around 30 km/h with not much pushing and even going up to 36 km/h on the way back. Nice to be back.

ALL THE PLACES

Mapa Mundi: all the places I’ve been with my race bike in red.

I have a strong cold. Fever, headache, body pain, etc. Typical of beginning of autumn. Because of that I can’t do much more then sit on the couch and enjoy the dripping nose. I can’t do my weekend house chores or cycle and I’m bored to death.

And because of that I went browsing the Golden Cheetah cycling software and found a way to export my heat map: a export to Google maps that shows all the places I’ve been riding in the last 3 years if I was wearing my Garmin computer. It is really nice to see where you’ve been and even recognize some of the memorable rides and remember who was with you just by a line on the map.

From the above map, of course Holland and Belgium are heavily marked, but also the Alps and Pyrenees, a bit of Italy and a small dot in Brazil. Take a look after the link how my heat map appear in more detail.

GOING SOUTH

image
134 kms | 4 h 36 m | avg speed 29.1 km/h | avg hr 1149 bpm | 2.572 kcal

The weather is holding well and yesterday was another good ride: 134 lonely ride from home to Bergen op Zoom. 134 kms on sunny weather, around 13 degrees Celsius and most of the time against a cross wind.

The only bad thing was Garmin navigation nightmare: I got lost so many times that and had to look several times on Googlemaps where I should go. While moving I managed speeds of 32 to 34 km/h. But because of the constant stop and re-start, total average went really down.

At the end, another good day on the saddle.
