Day 2: cooler, faster and nicer

Day 2 was a much, much nicer day than yesterday. The temperature was much lower big part of the day and a cool breeze was coming in that helped a lot compared to yesterday. We made 143 kms in 6 hours and 27 minutes of moving time, with an average of 22.2 km/h. Much higher than the 20 km/h average from yesterday.

I see the ride in 3 phases. The first one with rolling hills, which we all took gingerly. Nobody was sure how the legs would react after the ordeals of yesterday and all were riding very carefully not to push too much. We got some very gentle hills and amazing roads with no cars at all. Until around 50 kms when we did our first pit stop we were cruising easily.

The second part of the day is when we dis the longest climb of the day, 20 kms with a steep start and a long climb around 4% gradient. Easy but long. And better even, mostly protected by the sun. After this one, a short descent brought me to the biggest challenge of the day: the col de Montalet. A 3 km climb with 2 kms around 10% and parts of 16% inclination. Really hard but Im happy that I decided to tackle it (there was an option to do a shortcut and avoid it). When I started my heart raced too quick up and I decided to stop for a second. The temperature was around 37 degrees at this point. I took a couple of long seeps of water, let the heart rate go down to 135 beats per minute and then started again, completing the last 2 kms no problem.

The rest of the day, with around 50 kms to go was very fast. Mostly it was downhill with an occasional climb around 5 or 6%. I stayed with the group and we arrived together in the hotel. Happy to have used this day to recover and enjoyed great roads in this region of France.

FEAR - That been said, one thing that is bothering me is my way to descent steep hills. I’m not doing a great job and frankly it is embarrassing. When descending inclines over 10% I’m really chickening out and breaking heavily. And the same time I’m afraid to break too much and overhythe tires, causing them to explode.  Which makes me really tense in the downhills. Part of it is due to not having done big mountains for 4 years. One loses the touch and confidence. In other words, fear creeps in. Other is that this is the first time I have carbon wheels with rim breaks and I don’t what is the limit to overheat them and they do break and behave differently from aluminum wheels. Today I pushed myself a little harder on some turns. Let’s see if I can control this and lose the fear of crashing. They say when you are afraid of something you invite it to happen and if you have the technique and control, nothing happens.

LIVE TRACKING - Regarding the live tracking, sadly something went wrong when I updated the new link in the blog. The page didn’t updated and the link for today was not saved. I just realized that after I checked back at our destination. ☹️ I will double check tomorrow.

Day 1: hot hot hotter

Day one completed. 117 kms in 5 hours 51 minutes of moving time. But 9 hours and 21 minutes in total. Today was a heat wave day in the region, and we faced temperatures up to 44 degrees Celsius. Crazy heat that one could feel radiating from the asphalt and gusts of hot air that felt like out of a furnace.

The heat was so strong that caused two of our group to abandon the ride and we had to stop and wait for the team Van come to pick them up. That took a lot of time just standing in shades alongside the road and dehydrating slowly. Really hard day. I feel really bad for for the guys but hope they can recover for the next days.

From mu side I felt OK during most of the ride and even during the steep climbs of the day I was feeling good. Keeping my own pace and controlling not to overheat. The last 15 kms were a struggle though. At the end I was completely empty and feeling a little nauseated. Completely cooked. But happy to have completed a very hard first day. Now after a nice shower and two litters of water down I’m starting to feel better. Ready for dinner.

Tomorrow we need to think of a strategy against the heat.

Some metrics and pictures of the day below in order later to earlier in the morning

!

Day 9: Puerto de Sancho Leza (1390m) and another 7 climbs.

Day 10: Puerto de las Viniegras (1583m), Puerto de Herrera (1102m). A somewhat easier day.

Day 11: Puerto de Arlaban (598m), Monte Oiz (1019m) and another 5 climbs, following the route of the Classica San Sebastian.

Ride 7: last one in Spain

Last ride in Spain. And last serious training ride if the year before the event: 48 kms in 2 h 10 min and 624 elevation gain.  I’m really happy with the training I managed to keep doing while on vacation. Waking up early and being back before the family affairs started was a small price to pay for the gain or even better no loss in fitness.  In the last 2 weeks I did 21 hours of riding, 460 kms and climbed 5.7 thousand vertical meters.

Tomorrow I will be back in NL for a quick work week before heading out for France on Friday. Life is good.

Next: year training recap and plans for live tracking the event.

Ride 6: easy climbing

Today I woke up early to leave at 7:00 and catch the sunrise  it is a great moment of the day and I’m always amazed by the amount of people I see doing sports so early here in Alicante. Really nice. Not much else to say other than I rode “blind”. No bike computer on the handlebar to see speed and time. And no heart rate monitor. So, rode on feeling and after that almost two hours of Fronton and some laps on the swimming pool. Ready for lunch! 😬

About not having heart rate. The Garmin HR belt stopped working.  This thing os not even fully 6 months old and it is already stopping working  Really unreliable. I really like the bike computer but the bekt is bad and not exactly cheap. It stopped working, then the battery only lasted for 2 or 3 days and now stopped working even with new batteries. Really annoying.

Anyway see below some pictures.

Profile from home to Cuevas de Canelobre. Mostly climbing all the way there.

Top of the 2,5 kms climb with max of 12% and mostly around 9% gradient.

Who takes selfies on a 12% climb? Idiots, thats who does that.

Today the ride was with the bike of my brother in law. A Trek Emonda 52 cm with gravel tires. Nice bike. A little small for me in reality but it wasn't too bad for a short ride. I’m right between 54 and 56 cms frame size and usuallu have a 12 cm stem. I just could stand on the climb because I would be too much over the front wheel and anyway happy that I could use it.
