CLOSING THE YEAR

Last ride from the year in a sunny, cold and windy day. It was a good year with lots of indoor training and nice races. The highlights are below, on top of the great training rides I did with the Nike team and with Peter, my most constant cycling buddy this year.

Tour du ALS for the third time. Climbing the Mont Ventoux 3 times in one go and the best results and a great way to honor our friend Jos. Managed to climb all 3 times with a good cadence and especially the side from Maulacene where I managed to keep a great cadence uphill.

Col du Glandon on the Etape du Tour: a great ride in general but the climb of Glandon was very good and I managed to beat my own target by 10 minutes. The rest of the Etape on 41 degrees Celsius was less pleasant.

The  WTC Grensland Klassieker: a great team ride which I did half with the fast group and it was great feeling to be able to push in every climb.

The year in numbers:
Kilometers: 4.683
Activities (including gym): 128
Hours trained: 264
Hours on the road: 182
Kcalories: 133 thousand
Max speed: 82 km/h
Max heart rate: 190

ROUND UTRECHT

Sunrise at Utrecht Center

That was the beginning of yesterday ride with Tom, Stef and John.  Good ride with a punchy speed on the lekdijk and being dropped climbing the Amerongseberg.  The damage Tom caused in the dike going over 40 km/h really worked out and I climbed the easy side of the hill with milky legs. But the rest of the ride against the wind was great and better than last week.

Staring at the sea

Algumas vezes me senti assim.

I'm a stranger, killing and arab.

OVERDOING IT... AGAIN

pic 102 kms | 3 h 47 m | avg speed 27.1 km/h | avg hr 156 bpm | 2.345 kcal

December 20th and I’m cycling 100 kms in 10 degrees and sunny day. When did that happen before? Never. But I’m not complaining. And to make the most of it, I overdid quite a lot, suffering the last 15 kms just to get back home. But it felt fantastic to be back on the road after 7 weeks of little training and no bike at all!

I met Richard and Tom in Hilversum and from there we went direction north, with a bit of cross wind or tail wind. It was good fun and we even saw a running llama on the other side of the road. I’ve raced cats, dogs and even eagles. But this was he first time for a llama! there was also a moment when a gray heron flew very close to my head and the guys were making fun of me… all in good sport.

Everything was going find until we split in Bilthoven to go back home. The head wind and my lack of condition hit me hard. I went down from 28/30 km/h to mere 22 or best case 25 km/h. No power in the legs at all. It was a long 15 kms back home but at least no dog overtook me this time! Anyway, very happy to be healthy again (no throat infections, colds, etc) and out on my bike.

RECOVERY

56 kms | 1 h 54 m | avg speed 29.3 km/h | avg hr 153 bpm | 1.255 kcal

Autumn ride today.

After two weeks out of any sport because of a strong cold, I went for a little ride to start recovering. I can still feel the cold isn’t totally gone but it was good to go out in good weather and clean the lungs.

Because I knew it would be short, I went for a very known route alongside the farms or the region and later following the river Vecht. There was literally no wind I could keep up speed around 30 km/h with not much pushing and even going up to 36 km/h on the way back. Nice to be back.

ALL THE PLACES

image
Mapa Mundi: all the places I’ve been with my race bike in red.

I have a strong cold. Fever, headache, body pain, etc. Typical of beginning of autumn. Because of that I can’t do much more then sit on the couch and enjoy the dripping nose. I can’t do my weekend house chores or cycle and I’m bored to death.

And because of that I went browsing the Golden Cheetah cycling software and found a way to export my heat map: a export to Google maps that shows all the places I’ve been riding in the last 3 years if I was wearing my Garmin computer. It is really nice to see where you’ve been and even recognize some of the memorable rides and remember who was with you just by a line on the map.

From the above map, of course Holland and Belgium are heavily marked, but also the Alps and Pyrenees, a bit of Italy and a small dot in Brazil. Take a look after the link how my heat map appear in more detail.

GOING SOUTH

134 kms | 4 h 36 m | avg speed 29.1 km/h | avg hr 1149 bpm | 2.572 kcal

The weather is holding well and yesterday was another good ride: 134 lonely ride from home to Bergen op Zoom. 134 kms on sunny weather, around 13 degrees Celsius and most of the time against a cross wind.

The only bad thing was Garmin navigation nightmare: I got lost so many times that and had to look several times on Googlemaps where I should go. While moving I managed speeds of 32 to 34 km/h. But because of the constant stop and re-start, total average went really down.

At the end, another good day on the saddle.

Relax ride with Richard and Peter today following the Lekdijk. Great sunny weather, controlled speed and a fantastic route. For the first time I went thru the south side of the lekdijk all the way down to Rhenen and then back by the North side. A great ride and maybe the last long one from this year.

What a great way to finish a very intensive week at work! A good ride around the Gooimeer, close to the office, on a fantastic sunny and still warm day (17 degrees celsius). Maybe the last warm and dry day before Autumn rain start. Almost 2 hours of intensive riding with a good group.

Check how it went after the link.

Today was mountain bike day. Since the Etape was finished we have been trying to stick to the weekly Wednesday ride during lunch time. It is a great way to refresh ones mind for a quick hour on the bike and away from the email and meetings.

Today, despite the constant rain, temperature of 15 degrees and the prediction of a very muddy ride in the forest of Laage Vuursche, we decided to go for it. It was a great active ride with lots of mud pools, slides and jumps.

Great team.  On Sunday we will face a 50 kms mountain bike ride in the region of Neimegen, in the East side of Holland. We are participating on an event, Groesbeeks Gruwelijkste, for awareness of the Syndrome of Leigh, a disease that leaves the cells with no energy. Worth checking the www.road4energy.nl website.

It is going to be very hard because the region is full of very steep hill but it is a good cause.

BACK TO THE HEUVELRUG

80 kms | 2 h 44 m | avg speed 29.2 km/h | avg hr 154 bpm | 1.699 kcal

17 degrees mid strength wind cloudy day. Short and sweet back to the Utrecht Heuvelrug for a quick test of the legs on the climbs. All climbs went well and I manage to keep speeds always around 32 kms/h on the flat parts of the route. The number of traffic lights this route has is what brings the average down, I did get all of them red… Next weekend: 50 kms of mountain bike ride on the hills of Nijmegen.

OVERDOING IT

image
150 kms | 5 h 26 m | avg speed 27.6 km/h | avg hr 152 bpm | 3.081 kcal

I totally super estimated  my fitness condition today and under estimated the wind strength. I overdone in the distance riding 150 kms, which is the first time over 80 kms since the Etape in mid July. And the headwind and cross winds didn’t  help. But good raining nevertherless.
Hoje eu superestimei minha condição física e subestimei a força do vento.

The idea of the day was to get a steady zone 3 ride and do a loop in a new route. I chose to take the road to Schoonhoven (photo above) and follow the river Linge in the direction of Tiel. The ride into Schoonhoven was nice and quick, pushing 32 kms/h in the cross wind. In there I cross the river by Ferry and then I got quite some tail wind for more or less 15 kms. It was fantastic to be riding 40 kms/h with little effort.

The ride to Tiel is cool. Mostly on top of the dike and nice views and nice turns to keep it interesting. Even with a cloudy weather the rain hold for most of the time and I only got  little showers. The wind was mostly cross and I enjoyed the feeling of keeping the pressure to maintain the speed.

Just a little after Waardenburg, I turned left and the fun stopped. The tailwind that was fun a little before turned into a constant headwind. Speed went down immediately to 28 km/h and it was a long drag to home. The original idea was to hit Wijk bij Duurstede and got on top of the dike over the river Lek, with more or less 40 kms/h to go home. But the wind was too strong and I decided to go thru the roads from the inside. I took the road to Odijk and straight Utrecht.

Right at the end I got some cramps but managed to control it to be able to get home. Good ride to keep the fitness back up. Now back to the gym…

All races of the year are completed. No more training needed. It is great to just ride my bike with no computer, no heart rate monitor, nothing but relaxing and looking at the landscape. One little hour after dinner with a relaxing pace.

What a race it was the L’Etape du Tour this year. If last year was marked by freezing weather, this edition went to another extreme: 41 degrees Celsius in the last two mountains. It was a very hard day in the saddle, with 4 mountains to go thru summing up to 4300 vertical meters of climbing that the heat made especial challenging.

Check after the link how it went.

Second team ride of the Nike team in France. Today was an extreme ride for me with lots of pain, cramps and suffering. Also it was a very hot day, with 37 degrees in the shade and a feeling of 45 under the sun. For the first time since I started, I end up a ride getting into a car instead of completing it on bike. Humiliating but better now than on Sunday.

Read more about after the link and see some nice pictures.

IN FRANCE DAY 1

First team ride in France: hard & warm in the Col du Madeleine

Today was the first team ride in France for the Nike team. We left the hotel that is located 4 kms from the top of the Col du Madeleine, went to the top, descended 14 kms to the other side and returned. Sounds simple. Just got a bit complicated by the 11% gradients and the scorching 35 degrees, that felt like 50 in some places of the mountain. What a way to start.

Take a look at the pictures after the link.

BACK PAIN ON LAST WEEK

image
Action photo from last year L’Etape du Tour at the bottom of Hautacan.

One week for race day and I don’t feel all right. My lower back is really painful and I actually have only three days to recover before the first team training ride in France. My consolation right now is that I feel stronger as last year and more rested, which should give me a better chance to recover and be in good shape.

Take a look after the link what are the plans for the week.

RAIN AND WIND

In the last long ride training before the trip for the L’Etape du Tour in France, the Dutch weather gave me a nice gift: good temperature, a bit of rain and lots of wind. The wind was blowing from the Northwest at around 35 kms/h and if it helped at some point, it also made for a great training. Not for nothing the wind is said to be the Dutch mountain.

NICE AND QUICK

The ride today wasn’t much different from last weekend. Actually it was 99% the same. I just change one of the climbs at the turn around point as I’ve never done it. It was the Defesieweg in Elst and it was a great climb. The new thing is that this time I brought a little camera and I got some nice quick movies of the ride.

Take a look after the link.

MEMORY

Read today in the nice Deep Section blog:  "Farmers never remember the good seasons during bad ones and never remember the bad ones during good" and how this is just how I feel about Mont Ventoux. I'm 100 meters into the descending and already forgot how hard it was to get to the top...

Stolen from here :-)

PASSO GAVIA

And to top that, only the surely most beautiful climb ever! Passo Gavia. Hard, long and fantastic. I would go back there tomorrow if I could. Also, together with Stelvio, great descents!

STELVIO FROM BORMIO

I did this climb last September with a couple of Colleagues. To this day one of the most beautiful mountains climbs ever.

TOUR DU ALS - THE RIDE

Another edition of the Tour du ALS completed this year last Thursday 28th. Lots of climb, lots of kilometers and effort but more than anything lots of camaraderie and support. Everybody reached their goal in this hard day. More especially Sem, the daughter from our colleague and friend Jos, completed the climb from Bedoin which is considered the hardest side of Mont Ventoux.

See more details and pictures after the link.
Outra edição do Tour du ALS completa na última Quinta-feira, dia 28. Muitos quilômetros, muitas subidas e esforço pesado. E melhor ainda, muito suporte e camaradagem to time.

TOUR DE ALS - DAY 2

Day 2 in France and a especial one. We cycled with Sem, the 13 year old daughter of our colleague Jos thru the Gorge de la Nesque. It was a 33 kms ride with 17 km uphill and back. It is a good warm up for the ride tomorrow as it is easy, max 3.5% inclination. She did really well and (looks like) enjoyed it.
Tomorrow we will wake up at 3 am, start riding at 5 am and first ride the Mountain from Maulacene side. It is a first 15 kms before we get to the bottom of the climb and then we go the first 24 kms up. From the top we will go to Sault and turn around for the second climb. the trick will be to climb fast enough to be back to the start at 12:00 and ride it with the whole organization and Sem for the third time.
It is going to be hard but it is going to be great and we will have Jos in our minds the whole day! Check some pictures below and don’t forget to DONATE!

Next stop, car drive to France, team rides on Tuesday and Wednesday and the big ride on
Thursday. Weather forecast is on the warm side, 28 degrees celsius and lots of sun. Stay tuned as I will be posting pictures and stories.

Today ride was a Nike team ride again in Limburg, south of Holland. Team in good numbers for the WTC Grensland sportive for the 150 kms strong ride on the steep hills of the region. The weather was perfect: dry,  not too cold or warm and just a hint of a strong wind at the end. A great ride that I rode with two different sub-groups and managed to keep pushing all the way down to the finish.

BEING DROPPED

Last weekend I didn’t do any long ride training. It was Mothers day and I dedicated the weekend to the family. Just to avoid not posting anything I’ve added a video of the Classico Boretti with the climb of Italiaanseweg. Peter thought I was showing off and it was quick to remind me that he dropped me on the Grebberbeg.  Check how this could happen after the link and the training analysis so far…

First time in the year I don’t have to cover up everything.
