ETAPE DU TOUR 2011 ANNOUNCED

Today it has been announced next year Etape du Tour. It is going to be a different etape from the previous years: 2 stages at different dates instead of the traditional one day. On July 11th the stage 19 of the tour will be on the menu: 109 kms with 3 major climbs: Telegraph, Galibier and Alpe D’Huez. On July 17th we will have no mountains but a long 208 kms ride with mid range climbs. It is the stage 9 on the tour.

All in all it is a bit of disappointment. After the announcement from the full Tour yesterday, the general expectation was that we would do the stage 18 with a major 189 kms to climb and 3 mountains: Cold Agnel that is in total 60 kms climb, followed by L’Izoard, with 39 kms and finally Galibier with another 35 kms to climb. So, it would be a massive 150 kms of mountain climbing. That would be an epic Etape. Something to be proud of.

The 109 kms is going to be an against the clock race. Not an real endurance race like this year. And it is going to be dangerous. To begin with it will start with a 25 kms descend. The start of 9 and a half thousands cyclists on a descend sounds very dangerous to me. Everybody trying to make time? Not sure if that is a good idea… And the descend of Galibier will be also very fast and I’m not sure that Telegraph and Galibier will have spread the field enough. The only good part of the whole thing is to finish the etape on the top of Alpe D’Huez. That is going to be fantastic… I guess this is the day I will chose.

Foi anunciado hoje a Etape du Tour do próximo ano. Vai ser uma etapa diferente dos últimos anos: dois dias em vez do tradicional um dia de corrida. Em 11 de Julho enfrentamos a etapa 19 do Tour: 109 quilômetros com três montanhas: Telegraph, Galibier e Alpe D’Huez. A segunda corrida será no dia 17 de julho com 208 quilômetros somente com montanhas de tamanho médio. É a etapa 9 do Tour.

Em geral estou um pouco desapontado. Depois do anúncio do Tour de ontem a espectative era que a corrida seria na etapa número 18: 189 kms com 3 das maiores montanhas da França: Col Agnel com 60 kms de subida, seguido de L’Izoard com 39kms e finalmente Galibier com 35kms. Seriam 150kms de subida. Uma etapa épica para os amadores.

A corrida do dia 11 será contra o relógio do final das contas. Nada tão difícil que não alguém corra o risco de não terminar. Mas também vai ser perigoso. A corrida começa com 25 kms de descida. Para começar uma corrida com outros 9 mil e 500 ciclistas em descida me parece bastante perigoso. Todo mundo vai estar querendo fazer tempo e vão acabar fazendo besteira. A descida do Galibier também vai ser bem perigosa. A subida não vai espalhar os ciclistas o suficiente. A única parte boa é terminar no Alpe D’Huez. Isso sim vai ser fantástico...
