IN FRANCE - DAY ONE

GITE ON LES BOTTIERES. PERFECT PLACE FOR TRAINING FOR THE ETAPE WITH LOTS OF CLIMBS

GITE EM LES BOTTIERES. UM LUGAR PERFEITO PARA TREINAR COM VÁRIAS SUBIDAS

After a long 11 hours on the car yesterday, a nice dinner and very deep sleep night (I didn’t hear the thunder storm that supposedly hit the village during the night), today we did a quick ride against strong wind, rain and nice steep climbs. Only 35 kms of riding but with a climb of 17 km and a lot of 8 and 11% gradients to go thru. Nice to shake the car ride from the legs.

Depois de 11 horas no carro ontem, um bom jantar e um sono bem pesado (eu nem ouvi a tempestade de trovões durante a noite), hoje foi dia de encarar a primeira volta de treino na França. Com muita chuva, vento e subidas íngremes. Foram somente 35 quilômetros, mas com uma subida de 17 quilômetros e subidas entre 8 e 11% de inclinação. Bom para tirar a viagem de carro das pernas.

We started the day uncertain if we would be riding or not because the forecast yesterday was for heavy rain. Luckily the weather cleared up a bit and the forecast was to just light rain. So we decided to go down to the village at the bottom of La Toussuire e do Croix de la Fer, Saint Jean de Maurienne, and go up again back to our village, Les Bottieres. We saw the climb the day before and it looked both tough but nice with a lot of hairpins and very quiet. And we didn’t get disappointed. The road from Saint Jean de Maurienne to Les Bottieres, which share the same start with Croix de la Fer, is very quiet. Most of the time you are going up on a 7 to 8% gradient. The hairpins are not a relief, as they are very tight and usually the gradient goes up to 11%. But it is a very quiet and beautiful road with trees all along.

O dia começou com indecisão se íamos sair prá treinar ou não porque a previsão do tempo era de chuva forte. Mas felizmente o tempo mudou e a previsão era somente para chuva fina. Então decidimos descer até a vila que fica na base do La Toussuire and Croix de la Fer e voltar para a nossa vila, Les Bottieres. Vimos a subida ontem do carro e ela pareceu um bom treino com várias chuvas fechadas e bem tranqüila, sem tráfego. E não nos desapontamos. A estrada de Saint Jean de Maurienne até Les Bottieres é bem calma, quase sem carros. Na maioria do tempo você enfrenta subidas de 7 a 8% de inclinação e as curvas fechadas, ou hairpins no jargão ciclístico, não dão folga prá respirar. Eles são bem fechadas e forçam a inclinação até os 11%. Mas é uma subida tranquila e bonita, margeada por árvores todo o tempo.

Once we reached Les Bottieres we decided to keep going towards the top of La Toussuire that stays just 5 kms ahead. Until that point we were getting mostly very light rain but after this point the rain really started pouring down. At some point we did a right turn and joined the road the will be on the Etape. And also at that point the road was open, with no trees to protect us from the rain and wind. The finish at the top of La Toussuire was on heavy rain and wind. With gradients of 7 and 8%, it is still a tough cookie to face after Madeleine, Croix de la Fer and Mollard. Overall I was feeling tired and the legs were burning all the way to the top. The heart rate was also too high but I am hoping that it is the result of the long car ride of yesterday and of the cold I had at the beginning of the week. Tomorrow we will relax and climb the Croix de la Fer on Tuesday. Can’t wait!

decidimos continuar subindo na direção do La Toussouire, que fica a somente 5 kms. Até esse ponto só tínhamos pego chuva leve mas a partir de então a chuva começou a ficar pesada e o vento mais frio. Em algum ponto fizemos uma volta à direita e entramos na estrada que faz parte da Etape. E nesse ponto também as árvores desaparecem e não há proteção contra a chuva e o vento. O final no topo do La Toussuire foi debaixo de chuva pesada e vento frio. Com inclinação de 7 a 8%, é uma subida pesada, principalmente depois de ter subido la Madeleine, Croix de la Fer e Mollard. No geral eu estava me sentindo cansado e minhas pernas estavam queimando durante a maioria do tempo. Meu ritmo cardíaco também estava muito alto mas eu espero que seja reflexo da viagem de carro e do resfriado da semana passada. Amanhã vamos descansar e terça feira é dia de Croix de la Fer. Mal posso esperar!
