2014 L'ETAPE DU TOUR

PROFILE OF 2014 ETAPE. ALMOST THE SAME AS 2008 BUT 30 KMS SHORTER

Two weeks ago the 2014 L'Etape du Tour was announced. It is going to be 148 kms from the city of Pau to the top of the Hautacan mountain, going thru the almighty Col du Tourmalet. Sounds familiar? You bet! It is almost the same Etape of 2008 but with a bug chunk cut out of it! I do have mixed feelings about it. Look what I think about it after the link.

Duas semanas atrás a Etape du Tour de 2014 foi anunciada. Vão ser 148 kms saindo da cidade de Pau até o topo da montanha de Hautacan passando pelo poderoso Col du Tourmalet. Parece familiar? Podes crer! É quase uma cópia da Etapa de 2008, mas com uma parte bem grande cortada! Ainda não sei se gosto ou não disso. Veja depois do link os detalhes.

Since the 2010 Etape from Paul to the Cold du Tourmalet with its 189 kms long distance the ASO organization has been chosing the shorter mountain stages from the Tour de France. Whatever the reason being (cost, logistics, etc) this year is not different. The stage is just shy of 150 km and even beeing almost a copy of the 2008 Etape. Less 30 kms from the start that have been cut. In the map above you can see the difference between the routes of the two years. The red line is the 2008 route and the blue line is next year route until they coincide. From my memory of that year, after the start in Pau the roads immediately started going up and down. No flats until we passed the city of Lourdes. So, the 30 kms of rolling hill climbing at the beginning will be removed. But not the flat part between Lourdes and the beginning of the Tourmalet. In 2008 we rode that part against pouring rain and with strong headwinds. It was one of the most horrible parts of all my Etapes and it will be there again. If at the day, the weather will be raining, be ready to have a lot of your energy sucked out of you just before you face the big mountain. The good news is the descend of Tourmalet is a quick and fun one to do with long straight stretches and the road until Hautacan is beautiful. Again, still mixed feelings but still think that the prevoius day would be much better with much more climbing.

Desde a Etapa de 2010 que saiu de Paul até o Col du Tourmalet, com 189 kms de distância, a ASO vem escolhendo as etapas de montanhas mais curtas do Tour de France. Qualquer que seja a razão (custos, logística, etc.) este ano não foi diferente. A etapa é só um pouco mais curta do que 150 kms sendo quase uma cópia de 2008. Menos 30 kms do começo que foram cortados. No mapa acima da pra ver a diferença entre as duas rotas dos dois anos. A linha vermelha é a de 2008 e a linha azul é a do ano que vem ate' onde elas coincidem. Puxando a memória daquele ano, eu lembro que desde a saída de Paul a  estrada começa a subir e descer. Nada fica plano por muito tempo até chegar em Lourdes. O que quer dizer eles cortaram 30 kms de subidas. Mas a parte mais plana e chata entre Lourdes e o começo do Tourmalet ficou. Fizemos essa parte em 2008 embaixo de chuva forte e vento contra muito forte. Foi uma das partes mais chatas de todas as Etapes ate hoje. Se no dia da corrida estiver chovendo e ventando, se prepare para perder bastante energia antes mesmo de começar a subir o Tourmalet. A boa noticia é que descer o Tourmalet é bem rápido e divertido com longas retas e a estrada para Hautacan e' muito bonita. Ainda não sei o que achar dessa Etapa mas acho que seria muito mais interessante se fosse o dia anterior com muito mais desafios para escalar.
