EMPELLA PROJECT: SEMANA 1 / WEEK 1

The first week of the project of restauration of my first road bike in Holland is going somewhat slow. It took longer then I expected to unassemble it. But the hardest and dirtiest part is about to start.

GOOD NEWS: THE ORIGINAL CAMPAGNOLO BOTTOM BRACKET IS IN GOOD SHAPE.

WEEK 1

The process of taking the bike apart took longer then I expected. All the parts before getting to the bottom bracket were quite easy. All I needed were some allen keys and a screw driver and the job was done in an hour and a half. But the bottom bracket was much more difficult. First because, despite what the videos on Youtube say (like the one below) you need more then a normal 14/15mm wrench to take the first bolt. You need a especial tool that is very thin. After that you need a especial tool to pull the crank arm away from the bike (that the video shows). And I didn't have both tools and you don't find them easy to buy.

The best solution was to go to my LBS (local bike shop) close to my work in Hilversum(Thom Rooth) in Hilversum and ask the owner to help me. He is very friendly and did the job in less then 10 minutes. And he seems also happy to help someone that is restauring a vintage. He even asked me to come back to assemble it back when it is ready.

Now, the bike is soaking in a especial quemical product to remove the original paint from the metal frame. I've decided to use a quemical because it will make my life easier when I need to sand it. All original paint and rust needs to be out of the frame before the painting job starts. That is going to be a hard work!
