CLIMBING IN GERMANY

Tired. Exhausted. Completely nackered. But happy. This is the result of the team bike ride we did in Germany today: 108 kms in the hills of the Eifel region that took exactly 5 hours. I went thru lots of pain a huge effort but good results considering where I am in my training efforts.

Take a look at the details after the link.

Cansado. Exausto.

TEAM RIDE PREVIEW

ONE OF THE VIEWS OF THE RIDE IN EIFEL

Next weekend we will be traveling to Germany to ride  around 110 kilometers in the hillly region of Eifel. It is a car  travel of 2 and half hours but it is totally worth as this is a  very nice and scenery area. But also a region full of long and  steep hills, good tarmac and not many cars. I'm really  curious to see how my back is going to react on 6 to 7 kms  climbs and fast downhills.

MIXED FEELINGS

NATURE AND STEEP CLIMBS IN RHEDEN / ARNHEM

Today I decided to check how my back would react climbing something more steep then the 3% inclination hills I have around my home and something longer as well. So, the only choice that doesn't take 2 hours of traveling by car was to go to Arnhem. I climbed the Posbank and other climbs around and then came back home. The result: mixed feelings on a longer ride then expected, almost 110 kms, lots of pain and cold headwind.

CONTROL RIDE

This Sunday I've done my control ride from home to Gorinchem and back. In total 72 kms. I call it a control ride because it is a ride I repeat at the beginning of the cycling season and at the end and compare it to see how training is progressing. I can also compare how my fitness is compared with same time last year and see how far behind I really am.

SECOND RIDE ON THE POCKET

KOCKEGEN WITH WINDMILL IN THE BACKGROUND

Second race bike ride today in the morning went well. I combined a couple of roads, some that I haven't been for a long time and some that are constant in my routes. It was like riding in something completely new, scenic and stimulating 40 kms. The result: no pain in my back more power and more speed. Now I need to build up endurance. In the afternoon I sent to the physio also with good news.

Curious about the route, take a look after the link.

BACK ON THE RACE BIKE

Yesterday was the first time I got the race bike out since February 18th. This was the longest I've out of the bike since I started cycling 6 years ago. And everything went actually better then expected. Slow but painless. Or at least phisically painless as being taken over by fat cyclists was actually fainfull.

Take a look after the link how it went and my comparison with last year.

GOOD NEWS

IN THE HORIZON A HINT OF WHAT MIGHT BE COMING

On the 28th it made one month since my "accident" with my lower back. One full month in the couch  with very little moving around and even less sitting down. Lots of painkillers, anti-inflammatory pills and muscle relaxing drugs. And if you are active like me and is forced by pain to stay quiet, this type of thing affects your mindset. I was getting really grim but got very good news from the physio yesterday!

See after the link what are the news and what is going to happen next.

ETAPE DU TOUR STEP BY STEP

PROFILE OF THE RACE: 62 KMS OF CLIMBING NOT COUNTING THE 14 KMS
ROLLING HILLS BETWEEN THE TWO FIRST CLIMBS. NOT THAT EASY...

This year L'Etape du Tour stage might look easy when one look into the profile, but when you look at the details things are a bit different. It doesn't have a queen famous mountain on it but has four good climbs and a major 22kms relentless Mont Revard in the middle before you tackle the last climb of 10.7 kms with good chuncks of 11% inclination.

See after the jump the details of the climbs and what is between them that sometimes is even more important.

ROAD TO RECOVERY

PICTURES OF LAST YEAR ETAPE FOR SELF MOTIVATION PURPOSE ONLY

After four days in the hospital and weeks on Valium and Morphine I was thinking my cycling plans for the year were done. My lower back was still painful and weak and the injury felt like a long term problem to be solved. But with the evolution of last days and the forecast done by the doctors and physiotherapist last Saturday in the hospital, things are looking a bit better. I won't have the same speed as last year in the most important races and I will even miss some of them, but at least I will be able to participate in some...

Check after the jump my road to recovery.

MILAN SAN REMO

How The Race Was Won - Milan-Sanremo 2013 from Cosmo Catalano on Vimeo.

At the end of each race I always without patience for the funny and insightful reviews of Cosmo Catalano. He knows where to poke fun and know how to dose humor with his cycling knowledge to show things the layman wouldn't see. His website at www.cyclocosm.com is down however and I was getting anxious, but found out that the video is on Vimeo. Embedded above. Enjoy it!

And talking about Milan Sanremo, WHAT A MSR!!! I mean, to see the way those guys were battling the cold and rain was fantastic! Hard as nails! And there is no doping for that my friends! That is when cycling is THE sport. And the face of a beaten Sagan on a sprint he thought it was in the pocket is priceless!!!

NICE COVERS

If you know me by a bit you know that I'm a sucker for good graphic design. Well, I'm a frustrated graphic designer that never learned to draw properly... Because I'm still forbidden to even think about any exercise or work or anything apart from stay laying down the whole day, I am navigating the net a lot and found the above magazine covers caught my eyes. Look how beautiful they are! They are designed by Garry Marshall out of Scotland as the covers for the West Lothian Clarion bike club from UK. The magazine is  nice but those covers are over the top. They should be selling those as posters.

Click here for the link if you would like to take a look at their magazine.
Eles deveriam estar fazendo posters disso aí!!!
